What is a root canal?

A root canal is a type of endodontic therapy that is often recommended if tooth pulp and nerves become infected or damaged. This may occur if injury or decay reaches deep into the tooth, past the outer enamel layer.

Is a root canal painful?

You’ve likely heard the common expression, “I’d rather have a root canal,” which is used when comparing worst-case scenarios. But, actually, you’d rather have a root canal in the best of cases!

That’s because, contrary to popular myth, modern root canals are completed with minimal discomfort thanks to our advanced techniques, tools, and anesthesia.

How do you know if you need a root canal?

Root canals are often needed for a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, a faulty crown, or issues stemming from a previous filling.

If you notice severe tooth pain — especially while chewing — or extreme sensitivity to hot and cold foods, it may be an indication that there is a bigger problem requiring a root canal. Swollen or tender gums and deep decay or darkening of the gums can also be indicative of an infection requiring a root canal.

How much does a root canal cost?

The important thing to remember is that a root canal is generally covered — at least partially — under most dental insurance policies.

The cost does vary, depending on the tooth affected and how complex the problem is. That said, this type of endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth is generally less expensive than the alternative of having the tooth extracted. That’s because an extracted tooth needs to be replaced with an implant or bridge to restore your smile and maintain your oral health and generally requires multiple office visits.
